Wolves and Brighton have met 30 times in competitive games, with the first being in 1969. Wolves played Brighton away from home on 24th September 1969, and scored a 3-2 victory in the League Cup. Following that the next game was 10 years later on the 9th January 1979, where again Wolves met Brighton away from home, this time in the FA Cup, but again ran out with another 3-2 victory.
The two teams would then meet 7 times between 1979 and 1989, with Wolves losing every game, and Brighton becoming a bit of a bogey team for the boys in Old Gold.
The record for Wolves against Brighton to date is now 6 wins, 10 draws and 14 loses, but a lot of those loses came in the 80’s period when Wolves were on a downward spiral, just before Steve Bull and co. came to save the club from extinction.
Wolves most recent win against Brighton was on 1st January 2016 away from home, where we beat the Seagulls 1-0 in the Championship, where Wolverhampton born Conor Goldson scored an own goal to gift his home town the win.
I said this about the Watford game, but you have to believe that Wolves have it in them to beat Brighton. Brighton are having an okay season, but Wolves have been brilliant since August until the mishap against the Hornets last weekend.
The one worry for me is becoming that we don’t seem to have anybody on the front line that really wants to put goals away, with our top goalscorer only having two goals. That’s fine, if the rest of the team are scoring, which in the last few matches before Watford they did , but we need to score more.
Jota was our top goalscorer last season, and we haven’t had a single goal or assist from him yet this season. That’s not saying that he isn’t capable, he’s just not on form right now.
Although I think it’s rash to change too much from the previous games, based on one result, we need somebody that will create more chances, so perhaps it’s time to swap Costa and Jota for Cavaleiro and Traore, and see what happens?
My prediction for this game is Brighton 1-1 Wolves. We won’t lose but it might take a game or two to get the confidence back after last week.
